Technically, ergonomically and visually a perfect connection

AL-KO ball couplings AK 161 and AK 270 mark a jump in innovation and a generation change

The best ergonomics and functionality as well as innovation for more safety are combined in the new generation of AL-KO towbars for braked trailers up to 2,700 kilograms. The newly developed AK 161 and AK 270 couplings are now available for retrofitting and/or replacement. Starting in July 2016, we will begin delivering these to trailer manufacturers already mounted couplings to the overrun device.

The three-part hand grip offers significantly optimised ergonomics. It is made up of a solid metal core with an ergonomically-formed 2K plastic coating (Soft-Touch) that consists of two components. The upper black area of the hand grip is a harder plastic, and the lower red area is a softer plastic. Thus the hand lies closer on the grip, which enables improved and more precise operation because the ergonomically shaped extension to the grip serves as an anti-slip protection.

This new generation of ball couplings also guarantees even more safety due to a unique, innovative safety feature: AL-KO engineers have succeeded in implementing patented protection against unsuccessful locking that makes it almost impossible to carry out the hitching operation incorrectly. The principle: The internal securing lever is actuated only when the trailer's ball coupling is correctly positioned on the vehicle's towing hitch. Only then does the hand grip take up the horizontal position, indicating that a secure connection has been established. The coupling can be locked only in this way. In the closed position, the green safety indicator is pushed out by the ball of the towing hitch, and is therefore visible – a clear signal to the operator: The towing vehicle and trailer are correctly and securely connected and thus the journey can begin.

The wear indicator is integrated into the side of the ball coupling in a position that is simple and easy to read. In the hitched position, one glance is all that is needed to determine how the towing hitch to the vehicle or the ball coupling to the trailer is secured.

At AL-KO, Soft-Dock comes as standard for every AK 161 and AK 270. It helps to protect against scratches to the towing vehicle and also protects against shin injuries. In addition, AL-KO also offers an integrated push lock as an accessory. This anti-theft device, which can be used both when attached and unattached, provides effective protection against hasty unauthorised access.
